In my stepdad’s final moments, I was graced with the opportunity to say everything I’ve ever wanted to say to him. But truthfully, I could hardly muster more than “I love you” and a few jokes. I’m going to try and be more articulate than that now.

Many people grow up without a dad. I grew up with two. My stepdad, Eugene (Beans❤️) Vandersanden came into my life when I was just three years old, bringing my brother and sister and I three beautiful step sisters with him. Simply put, I don’t remember life without them. We became a family of eight and an absolute unit. When you’re six kids, every moment is organized chaos. I grew up thinking having siblings was the greatest gift ever given to me. Beans and my mom tried so hard to make sure we always had fun in our lives, even when times were tough. Beans always referred to my sister and brother and I as HIS children - something that you can only appreciate if you grow up with a non biological parent. We were his and he was ours.

Beans was a force in the room. He was a real cowboy, both tough and tender. He loved to tell a story and he loved to laugh. He believed in all of us. He told me I was going to be famous one day and I think he meant it. He had a million friends and his death brought a parade of support through my mom’s doors in his final months and weeks with us. My heart is broken from losing him, and simultaneously swollen from weeks of holding and laughing and crying with family while we said goodbye. We lost him way too soon, but we’ll cherish these memories forever.

Beans, I love you. Rest peacefully 🕊️
